Lisbon selected as the First PRACE Headquarters Location

PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, decided to place its headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal, starting in 2010.

The selection of Lisbon as the seat of the PRACE headquarters is an important step towards the creation of a persistent pan-European High Performance Computing (HPC) Research Infrastructure. The PRACE Management Board unanimously selected Portugal as headquarters location for an initial period of 12 to 18 months. The final decision will be the mandate of the Council of the PRACE legal entity once it is established.
Pedro Alberto from University of Coimbra, the Portuguese partner in PRACE states: ‘We are delighted that PRACE has chosen Lisbon. This is another strong sign of the truly pan-European nature of PRACE, showing that all participating countries, including those not hosting tier-0 centers, have an important role to play in PRACE.”

About PRACE: The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) prepares the creation of a persistent pan-European HPC service, consisting of several tier-0 centres providing European researchers with access to capability computers and forming the top level of the European HPC ecosystem. PRACE is a project funded in part by the EU’s 7th Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° RI-211528.
