Afghan universities connect to GÉANT

Three universities in Afghanistan can now collaborate with their counterparts in Europe thanks to the interconnection agreed between GEANT and the NATO-led SILK Afghanistan project.

Sponsored by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, SILK Afghanistan connects campuses in Afghanistan via a 43-Mbps satellite link to a teleport hub in Bratislava, from where traffic is carried via a terrestrial link to the GÉANT Point of Presence (PoP) in Vienna. Initially connecting Kabul University, Herat University and Bamiyan University, plans exist to connect a further four Afghan universities over the duration of the three-year project.
